The Mountain Phoenix Community School is overseen by the Governing Council. The current seven member council is comprised of parents and community members. Board Members have actively served on a school committee and have demonstrated interest and commitment to the mission of the school. The Mountain Phoenix Governing Council holds regular business meetings 4th Wednesday of each month, beginning at 6:30 PM. The public is invited and encouraged to attend the Regular Business Meetings to keep informed. There is a time for public comments at the beginning of each Business Meeting. An agenda for each meeting will be posted on the Governing Council Meeting Agenda Page at least 24 hours in advance.
2014-2015 MPCS Governing Council Members
President, Kyle Schurter (2nd Term, 2014/15 – 2015/16): Kyle Schurter is a licensed professional engineer who is an owner and principal at one of the largest structural engineering firms in Colorado. In that role he has provided design services for a variety of rewarding projects including high-end custom homes in Jackson Hole, the Student Success Building at Metropolitan State University, a large industrial building in Brighton for the wind energy sector, and over 40 pubic art pieces across the country. He also serves as Quality Assurance Manager for his firm.
With his wife, Jane, Kyle has two young children in attendance at Mountain Phoenix. He and his family came to MPCS in 2012. Since that time he has served on the Master Planning committee, joined the Governing Council in early 2013, and helped facilitate the building of the Middle School building. In his current role as president, his focus is on promoting excellence of charter school governance and solidifying our school’s status as a leader in education inspired by Waldorf ideals.
Vice President: Jeff Wilhite (1st Term, 2014/15, 2015/16): Jeff has been involved with MPCS for the past 3 years initially facilitating the establishment of the MPCS Foundation. He was instrumental in the purchase of the current campus as the advisor to the school in arranging for the underwriter of the purchase bond. Jeff was asked to join the MPCS Governing Council based on his demonstrated commitment to the school, his interest in Waldorf Education and his experience in charter school governance.
Jeff’s commitment to charter school education started when his son and daughter enrolled in middle school at Rocky Mountain Academy of Evergreen. RMAE was extraordinary impactful for his children shaping the fundamentals for their subsequent educational and personal successes. Jeff served on the RMAE Board for 3 years holding the positions of Treasurer and Board President. He was a founding board member of the RMAE Foundation also serving as its Executive Director for one year. Jeff served on the State of Colorado Educational Success Task Force for two years. He serves as a frequent member of the CDE charter school start-up and expansion grant award committee and as a presenter at the Colorado Legue of Charter Schools convention.
Jeff has been involved in banking for over 30 years primarily focusing on real estate/construction lending and business development. He has a BA from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN and a MA from Goddard College in Vermont.
Secretary, Robin Adams (1st Term, 2013/14 – 2014/15): Robin is a partner / owner of a small architectural practice in northwest Denver. With 20 plus years in the architectural profession, Robin’s diverse experience offers creative thinking, problem solving, organizational abilities and project management skills to support the mission of the board. Robin works with the Facilities and Master Planning committees to assist in implementing the “built environment” goals of the strategic plan.
Treasurer, Victoria Hannu (1st Term, 2013/14 – 2014/15): Victoria is an internationally known executive coach and culture alignment expert. She takes a highly innovative and integrated approach to business and organizational development by approaching brand and culture alignment from the inside-out. Having over 18 years’ experience in the corporate world prior to becoming an entrepreneur and CEO, she has a unique understanding and perspective of what it takes to create a culture in an organization, regardless of size, that enables it to function optimally and profitably by having a culture that is infused throughout the organization’s systems and processes. Victoria heads the Alignment and Communications Committee.
Member at Large, Gina Schley (1st Term, 2013/14 – 2014/15): Gina is a mother of two children at Mountain Phoenix (Grades 1 & 3) and has been with the school since the Wheatridge campus opened. She plays an instrumental role helping lead the Marketing & Communications Committee, leads the Annual Give Campaign for the MPCS Foundation, and assists the Master Planning Committee particularly as it relates to grounds and playscapes. Through serious investigation Gina developed a deep respect for Rudolf Steiner’s philosophies, in both education and agriculture, and is very passionate about bringing Waldorf Education to the public school realm. She believes the Waldorf Charter School movement isn’t just a trend; it is a concept that will impact the future. She also believes that women should sit at the table and see’s herself as bringing a “mother’s perspective” to the board room.
Gina has a BA from Bowling Green State University and is pursuing a masters degree in Environmental Leadership. Previously, she had a successful corporate career working in the fiberglass industry for Owens Corning where she lead various assignments in marketing communications, business management and sales. It wasn’t until she and her husband, Rodman, were blessed with their two children that her life changed and she found a passion in environmental work. She’s become deeply involved in the world of humanitarian work as a grassroots community organizer and urban agriculture activist. She and her husband host a PBS television series called Urban Conversation which documents environmental leaders across the country in hopes of teaching others about sustainability as they learn themselves. Their most exciting moment as a family has been working in the 1st Lady Michelle Obama’s garden on the south lawn of the White House and sharing her very first watermelon.
Member at Large (1st Term, 2014/15 – 2015/16): Nathan Ballenger is a Father of three boys with his wife Rachel Cooper. Nathan brings experience as President, Secretary and member of multiple Boards and Councils. He was a key member of building and teaching at a small Waldorf school in Mancos, CO, where he learned about Waldorf education from a teacher, Mariam Barton, with over 30 years of Waldorf teaching experience. He and Rachel have raised all three boys with a strong commitment to principals aligned with Waldorf Philosophy. Nathan has a BS in Biology, and has traveled extensively all around the world with extended periods in India and South America. He has significant speaking experience in Spanish, and has studied French and German as well. Nathan is a tradesman, and previously owned a contracting company specializing in natural building, but transitioned out of natural building almost five years ago into internet marketing and business. He currently works as a Search Engine Marketing Senior Consultant, and spends his “free” time practicing Vipassana mediation, gardening, hiking and playing basketball and soccer. He also enjoys reading, playing in the river, and can say the alphabet backwards while on six-foot stilts..
